Objectives

SILK develops and introduces new ways of treating diseases of the eye.  Research concentrates chiefly on chronic retinal diseases which constitute a threat to vision, such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Apace with population ageing these illnesses will become much more common in the years to come.

Through co-operation projects, SILK endeavours to develop alternative research methods in medication and biomedical research.  SILK tests various experimental ophthalmic disease models and clinical research methods and also new forms of medication and tissue technology treatments, diagnostic measurements and imaging equipment and new forms of dosing.  With its extensive expertise in eye and vision research SILK offers research institutes and enterprises opportunities for co-operation.  SILK moreover seeks in its operations to support and create preconditions for co-operation with the third sector, e.g. patients’ associations.
